Ingredients

  • herring fillet in oil 500 grams
  • white onion 2 large pieces
  • sunflower oil 4.5 tablespoons
  • ketchup 2.5 tablespoons
  • tomato paste 3 tablespoons
  • canned tomatoes 1 can
  • salt 1 to taste
  • ground black pepper 1 to taste
  • bay leaf 2 pieces
  • allspice 4 pieces
  • sugar 1 teaspoon
  • red wine vinegar 1 teaspoon
  • sweet paprika powder 0.5 teaspoons

Instructions

  1. Soak the herring fillets in cold water, depending on how salty they are. During soaking, it is good to change the water at least once.
  2. Drain the herring well and cut it into pieces.
  3. Sauté the onion in hot oil until translucent, adding the allspice and bay leaf.
  4. Add the tomato paste, ketchup, and vinegar. Season with sweet ground paprika, salt, ground pepper, and sugar.
  5. Cook, stirring constantly, then add the canned tomatoes and mix well.
  6. Remove the sauce from the heat and let it cool completely.
  7. Add the prepared herring to the cooled sauce and gently mix.
  8. Cover and refrigerate so the flavors can meld.
  9. Transfer the finished herring to glass bowls or salad bowls and serve.
